I recently read a book by Arthur Brooks that challenged the way I think about boredom.
He describes our smartphones as anti-boredom devices, always ready to fill every quiet moment with notifications, videos, emails, or endless scrolling. We’ve become so uncomfortable with stillness that we reach for distraction before we ever have a chance to think.
But what if boredom isn’t the enemy?
What if it’s the doorway to creativity, clarity, and purpose?
Some of life’s greatest ideas don’t arrive while we’re rushing from one task to the next. They show up in the silence. During a walk. Sitting on the porch. Driving without the radio. Simply allowing ourselves to be present.
You don’t have to earn rest.
You don’t have to fill every empty space with productivity.
Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is put the phone down, embrace the quiet, and give your mind the room to breathe.
Your next breakthrough may be waiting in the silence you’ve been trying to avoid.
